Annual Report 2002: Preface

For Afghanistan, a country that has stood at the confluence of natural and man made disasters for nearly three decades, the year 2002 was perhaps the first time in as many years when its people experienced a genuine prospect of peace and progress.

From our point of view, the year 2002 was momentous also in the admission of nearly all parties in Afghanistan that without the genuine participation of women in the peace process as well as their engagement in the reconstruction initiatives, little can be achieved in bringing long term peace and prosperity to Afghanistan. What needs to be achieved now is to translate this admission into concrete reality.

The Shuhada Organization continued it's emphasis on community empowerment throughout 2002 with an understanding that the greater opportunity provided by the circumstances is also accompanied by a greater urgency and impetus for tangible short and long term progress.

As is borne by this report, our level of engagement in health training and education increased considerably during 2002. We are thankful to the donors for their generosity, and will also urge them to continue their valuable support in the future. We also request their diligence and continous emphasis towards the resolution of problems that face Afghan women.

Finally, the organization also thanks the communities who have invested their trust and confidence in us, and for their courage in seeking a better future for their children.
